 Maltipoo Puppies

When is a Maltipoo a Puppy?

Maltipoo puppies are just that until the age of 1 year old.  The age definition is as follows:
  • Birth to 7 weeks old = a newborn
  • 7 weeks to 1 year = a puppy
  • 1 year to 8 years = an adult
  • 8 years on - a senior dog
And this section is to talk about puppies!  What could be cuter!  Let's talk about what they look like,  what normal behavior is and what to expect as they are growing up!

Milestones

Maltipoo puppiesMaltipoo puppies are quite round, they have some "puppy fat" and it helps to create that  cuddly look.  They begin with their puppy coat, which is usually soft and fluffy.  As they grow, they will thin out a bit and the puppy coat will be replaced with their adult coat.  They grow quickly, and milestones pass fast....

3 weeks old -  You can expect the pup to begin to hear, for their eyes to open and to begin to try and walk. The keyword there is "try".  It is very normal for Maltipoo puppies to stumble and wobble.  They need to get used to stretching out their muscles and finding their balance.  Much sleep in needed at this young age, and some may sleep 18-20 hours a day...But it will not be long before you wish that he or she took more naps!

5 weeks old - By this time, they are hearing fully, seeing fully and walking very well.  Many will be play fighting with littermates and bouncing around.

At this age, they are learning behavior from the dam and their littermates....particularly the act of biting....This is part of play for them.....When they bite too hard, the other pup will yelp very loudly and usually ignore the offender for a bit....This teaches the youngster to not do it so hard.

They are still dependent on the mother (dam) at this point, but they are almost ready to be more independent.

6 weeks - Born without any teeth, "baby" teeth are now fully emerged for most...enjoy this time, it won't be long before they fall out!

8 weeks old -
Now weaned off of the dam, they are ready to explore a new world.  De-wormed and with the 1st round of puppy shots, they are ready to go to new homes if that is to be the case.  At this age, training can slowly begin and baths can be given.  One must still be aware of possible hypoglycemia issues (a rapid drop in blood sugar)....And one should look out for this until the age of 3-4 months.

When this happens, Maltipoo puppies will become very weak, breathing shallow, seeming to be dizzy when walking....And karo syrup should be rubbed into the gums (it is quickly absorbed into the blood stream in this way).....And then the pup should be taken to the veterinarian to make sure that they are alright.

In very severe cases, an IV needs to be inserted until sugar levels are straightened out. You can read more about this in our size section.

Behavior

One must be patient as the new puppy explores and tries to understand his world.   Everything is new...And just about everything is a potential chew toy!  Pocket books, shoes, clothing, dangerous electrical wires....these are all appealing to Maltipoo puppies....

They think, "What is this?!", "Is this food?", "Is this a toy?"....And they explore with their mouths.  So, between teething and mouth exploration, Maltipoo puppies can do quite a bit of damage if items are not kept out of the way.

The teething stage can start as early as 4 months and ends approximately at 7 months, but may are early birds and many are late bloomers.

Maltipoo puppyHouse training can begin....And one must keep in mind that even if an owner does everything "right", it does take time for the puppy to understand what to do and for accidents to not happen.  It may seem as if Maltipoo puppies urinate all of the time, but water must never be restricted!

2 month old pups go about every 2 hours, 3 months about every 3 hours and so one....This holds true until roughly the age of 8 months, when the 8 hour mark is hit and it stays this way for a lifetime.

If a pup needs to be left home alone, it is very important that they are not stuffed into a crate for 8 hours.  A gated in area works best....filled with a crate that they can enter and exit at will, toys, food, water, a blanket, pee pads and preferably a radio or TV playing in the background.

Feeding Times

Puppies from 8 weeks to 3 months should be free-fed, this means that food is available at all times.  After that, it is best to schedule meal times.  Until the age of one, 3 meals are usually given. Do keep in mind that a pup will generally need to have a bowel movement 15-20 minutes after eating.  At the 1 year mark, meals can be given 2 times per day...Usually by 2 years, your Maltipoo will be old enough to have just 1 large dinner.  Again, it is vital to have fresh, cool water available at all times.

The dog food bowl and water should not be moved.  It is important that he or she always knows where it is.  This holds true for their bed as well...So that when they feel like resting or getting away from any noises or commotion that they find overwhelming, they have a comfortable place to retreat.
