Maltipoo Weight

Overview

We here at PetMaltipoo conducted a comprehensive survey of over 2500 Maltipoo owners. One of the questions that we asked only to those with adult Maltipoos (that were done growing), and one that we think many owners were really looking forward to seeing the tallied results for, was 'How much does your Maltipoo weigh?'

Here, you'll see the details results of that survey question, as well as FAQ regarding Maltipoo weight.

Stats Regarding Maltipoo Weight

About Our Survey:
In April of 2018, we here at the PetMaltipoo site sent out a request to our site Members to partake in a comprehensive survey regarding their Maltipoos. There were a total of 2,596 respondents. Of these, 83% were located in the US, 4% in Canada, 2% in the UK, 1% in Australia, and the remaining 10% in a various other countries around the world.

In regard to gender of the puppies and dogs, 55% of the Maltipoos were females and 45% were males.

Importantly, the question of age was asked since Maltipoos do not reach their final adult weight until the 10 to 12-month mark. The survey split off so that when asked this question, only those that answered 'young adult 1 - 3 years old' (49%), 'adult 4 - 8 years old' (22%), and 'senior 9+ years' (5%) were then asked about their Maltipoo's weight; this consisted of 1,973 respondents. Those that had young pups less than 6 months old (9%) and puppies 6 to 11 months old (15%) were not asked the weight question.

Of those 1,973 owners of adult dogs, 17% were unsure of how much their Maltipoo weighed, which left 83% (1,638) to provide the weights.

Summary:

Since Maltipoos have such a wide range of weights, from a teeny 3 pounds (1.36 kg) to over 17 pounds (7.7 kg), it can be helpful to look at this data in larger sub-groups.

Out of 1,638 fully grown Maltipoo dogs:

The majority, 70% which equaled 1147 dogs, were 7 to 13 lbs. (3.1 to 5.8 kg)
A good number, 20% which equaled 327 dogs, were 14 to 17+ lbs. (6.35 to 7.7+ kg)
And a small number, 10% which equaled 164 dogs, were 3 to 6 lbs. (1.36 to 2.7 kg)

And, if you want to think about a Maltipoo's weight as being over 10 pounds (4.5 kg) or at 10 pounds (4.5 kg) and under, the breakdown is:

46% are more than 10 pounds (4.5 kg)
54% are 10 pounds (4.5 kg) and under

Maltipoo Weight Classification

You may wonder if Maltipoos are considered to be toy breed dogs or small breed dogs. Officially, only purebreds are grouped as such, but unofficially the answer is, both. Though, most would be considered to be in the toy breed category.

The AKC groups purebreds by weight as follows:
  • Toy - Most are 3 to 10 lbs, but  some are a bit larger at 18 lbs.
  • Small - There is crossover with those in the toy group but most are between 10 and 25 lbs.
  • Medium - Lots of breeds are in this group and are generally between 20 and 40 lbs.
  • Large - This refers to dogs that are between 55 and 85 lbs.
  • Giant - This is reserved for massive dogs that are close to or over 100 lbs. and some are upward of 200 lbs.
Our survey had a comment box along with the weight question so that those that entered a weight of 'over 17 lbs.' could enter it. The highest weight entered was 25 lbs. (11.34 kg). Keeping the crossover weights in mind of toy breeds (3 to 18 lbs.) and small breeds (10 to 25 lbs.), both groups together are anywhere from 3 to 25 pounds, and that is the size of every Maltipoo dog that we received weight stats for.

Maltipoo Weight Compared to Other Breeds

Now that we covered how much you can expect a Maltipoo to weigh once fully grown and their basic weight classification, you may be wondering how, exactly, Maltipoos compare to some popular toy and small breed dogs.

Please keep in mind that the following are AKC listed weights of purebreds and therefore are the sizes judges expect to see in the conformation show ring; dogs that are household pets that will not be entered into conformation competitions have a wider weight range, often leaning towards being a bit larger than the standard.

Maltipoos generally are 7 to 13 lbs. (3.1 to 5.8 kg), though the range is from 3 to 25 lbs. (1.36 to 11.3 kg)

And the weights of other toy and small breed dogs are as so:

Affenpinscher 7 - 10 lbs. (3.1 - 4.5 kg)
Bedlington Terrier 17 - 23 lbs. (1.7 - 10.4 kg)
Cavalier King Charles Spaniel 13 - 18 lbs. (5.9– 8.2 kg)
Chihuahua 6 lbs. and under (2.7 kg)
Coton de Tulear 9 - 15 lbs. (4 - 6.8 kg)
Havanese 7 - 13 lbs. (3.2 – 5.9 kg)
Japanese Chin 7 - 11 lbs. (3.1 - 5 kg)
Lhasa Apso 12 - 18 lbs. (5.4 - 8.2 kg)
Maltese Under 7 lbs. (3.2 kg)
Miniature Schnauzer 11 - 20 lbs.(5 – 9 kg)
Papillon 5 - 10 lbs. (2.3 - 4.5 kg)
Pomeranian 3 - 7 lbs. (1.4 – 3.2 kg)
Poodle, toy 6 - 9 lbs. (2.7 – 4 kg)
Poodle, mini 10 - 15 lbs. (4.5 - 6.8 kg)
Pug 14 - 18 lbs. (6.4 - 8.2 kg)
Shih Tzu 9 - 16 lbs. (4 – 7.3 kg)
Yorkshire Terrier 7 lbs. and under (3.2 kg)

Maltipoo Weight Compared to the 'Parent Breeds'

A first generation Maltipoo is a cross between a Maltese and a toy or miniature Poodle. But now that Maltipoos have become such popular 'hybrid' dogs, there are lots of second generation dogs that are the result of Maltipoo to Maltipoo pairings. And, even some third generation dogs.

So, it is only natural to want to compare the Maltipoo's expected size, generally within the 7 to 13 lb. range (3.1 to 5.8 kg), with the breeds that are responsible for this incredible cross-breed.

The Maltese is one of the smallest toy breeds; the AKC calls out for a dog that is 'under 7 pounds' (3.2 kg) which is exceptionally tiny. This said, pet Maltese (those not expected to compete in conformation show rings) are commonly a bit larger in the 8 to 12 pound range (3.6 to 5 kg). This pet weight is very close to what one can expect with the majority of Maltipoos.

The toy Poodle, which is currently the variety most used in Maltipoo breeding programs, is also a small dog but is a bit larger than the Maltese. The AKC lists the weight as being a tiny 6 to 9 lbs. (2.7 to 4 kg), though, again, pets are generally bigger and you can expect to see some toy Poodles in the 10 to 12 lb. range. These numbers track closely in line with many Maltipoos.

Miniature Poodles, which were often used in Maltipoo breeding programs when this hybrid was rather new and are sometimes still used today, are sturdier dogs with an AKC listed weight of 10 to 15 lbs. (4.5 to 6.8 kg) for 'show dogs', so you will see some pet mini Poodles closer to 20 pounds (9 kg) which is the weight seen with a small number of Maltipoos.

The Maltese is in the AKC toy group, with an AKC breed standard size of under 7 pounds.
Toy Poodle size compared to Maltipoo
Per AKC breed standards, toy Poodles have an official height of 10 inches or under and an unofficial weight range of 6 to 9 pounds.
Mini Poodle size compared to Maltipoo
The miniature Poodle is larger than the toy; the AKC breed standard calls out for a height of over 10 but under 15 inches. The unofficial weight is between 10 to 15 pounds.

Estimating Adult Weight

With breeds that have a very narrow expected adult weight, it's pretty easy to guess how big they'll be once fully grown. But, since Maltipoos have such a wide range of adult weights, estimating final size is not so easy.

So, there are two elements that can help:

1. Size of the parents. A dog's size (height and weight) is genetic. If you are able to see both the sire and dam or at least know how much each weighs, this will give you a good ballpark figure of what to expect with the pups in the litter.

2. Weight of the puppy. There is definitely some wiggle room, but knowing how much a puppy weighs at certain ages can be a guide to see how small or large they will be as adults.
  • A long-held guideline for toy and small breeds is to take the weight at the age of 6 weeks and multiple this by four. For example, if a Maltipoo weighs 2 pounds at the 6-week mark, their estimated adult weight is 8 pounds.
  • Another standby method is to double the weight of a 4-month old puppy. For example, if a 4-month-old Maltipoo is 6 pounds, the estimated adult weight is 12 pounds.
  • PetMaltipoo's guideline is to look at the weight of an 8-week-old pup. If it is under 2.5 pounds, multiply that by 4 and add .25. And if it is 2.5 pounds or more, multiply it by 4 and add 1. For example, the estimated adult weight of an 8-week-old Maltipoo puppy that's 1.75 pounds is 7.25 pounds (1.75 x 4 + .25). And, the estimated adult weight of an 8-week-old Maltipoo puppy that's 2.75 pounds is 12 pounds (2.75 x 4 + 1).

When a Maltipoo Needs to Gain Weight

If you think that your puppy or dog needs to gain weight, the very first thing you should do is bring your Maltipoo to the veterinarian.

With pups, it is essential that the vet do an examination to see if it is a matter of a Maltipoo puppy simply having small body structure or if it is a matter of malnutrition and/or stunted growth. And with adults, barring those put on a diet, any noticeable weight loss almost always points to some sort of health issue.

There are certain diseases and conditions that can cause a puppy to struggle to gain or an adult to have trouble maintaining their weight. Treatment varies depending on the issue. In some cases, additional treatment with a high-calorie nutritional gel like Tomlyn NutriCal Supplement or prescription appetite stimulants may be given.

When a Maltipoo Needs to Lose Weight

Though it is not overly common, even toy and small breed dogs can end up overweight and needing to lose a few pounds. It usually comes down to taking in more calories than are being expended. Dogs that are sedentary, seniors older than 10, those that are fed table scraps, and those with health issues that limit their activity are most at risk for canine obesity.

Fortunately, helping a Maltipoo lose weight can be accomplished with the simple combination of fewer calories and more exercise. Making a meal plan with lower calorie foods that keeps portion sizes the same and gradually making changes to activity level can help keep the process stress-free.
